The Roderick Group was selected to perform various Phase I engineering services for the Illinois Department of Transportation under PTB 162. Specifically, services consist of evaluating existing crosswalks at intersections along state routes in District 1 for compliance with current accessibility standards. Any deficiencies are to be identified and recommendations made as to the magnitude and prioritization of improvements necessary to achieve compliance.The Roderick Group is responsible for oversight of data collection, geometric studies, GIS mapping, preparation of cost estimates, public involvement, and all other related work necessary to complete the study.

IL-7 to Will Cook Road

The Roderick Group participated as a Phase II Design protégé for the widening and reconstruction of a four-mile stretch of Illinois Route 7 (159th Ave.) in Will County, Illinois.

The existing two-lane highway will be expanded to a 4-lane arterial with turn lane at various crossroads, and accommodations to existing commercial access points. Traffic signals will be included at six intersections; drainage improvements and various structural modifications will be incorporated; erosion and sediment control measures will be employed. Construction will be staged to allow 2 lanes of traffic throughout construction.

The Roderick Group assisted in the preparation of contract plans and Specifications, along with the coordination of various utilities and other stakeholders.

Weber Road at I-55

The Roderick Group was a sub-consultant to Knight E/A to provide supporting Phase II engineering services for the improvements at the Weber Road interchange along Interstate Route 55. The Roderick Group and Knight entered into a Mentor-Protégé relationship so that The Roderick Group could acquire additional experience in traffic signal design (temporary and permanent), interstate signing improvements, and storm sewer design.

Additional services included the preparation of pavement marking and signing plans and assisting in the calculation of related quantities.

Building Green Street

The Roderick Group served as a subconsultant on the Rebuilding of Green Street from Neil Street to Fourth Street project. Improvements included converting Green Street from a three-lane roadway to a two-lane roadway with bike lanes on both sides to promote a reduction in vehicular traffic as well as traffic signal modernization at the intersection of Green Street and First Street. Further, drainage modifications included traditional and eco-friendly solutions to incorporate adjacent water systems and streetscape measures integrated new construction with prior adjacent improvements to promote pedestrian traffic west of the main campus area.

The Roderick Group’s Phase I tasks included crash analysis, intersection design studies, Auto-Turn analysis, traffic signal warrant analysis, geometric improvements based on Champaign and Local Roads Design Criteria, preliminary estimates of cost, design variance documentation, and conceptual maintenance of traffic plans.

The Roderick Group’s drafters, designers, and engineers provide various design services to Commonwealth Edison. Some of The Roderick Group’s services include the development of drawings related to substation improvements and upgrades to secondary electrical distribution systems. Other services include design and installation oversight of new utility poles, underground conduit, and other facilities on the ComEd system.

Nicor Distribution Design

The Roderick Group provides utility design services for various public improvement projects for Nicor Gas.  The Roderick Group’s staff coordinates with surveyors, land services, environmental, and several other departments at Nicor to establish the relocation of Nicor facilities due to construction. Tasks include creating topography maps of pavement, trees, and utility manholes, developing construction drawings, as well proving project cost estimates.

The Roderick Group was a subconsultant to Knight E/A and provided Phase III engineering services to the Illinois Tollway for their portion of improvements to provide an interchange at Interstate Route 57 with Interstate Route 294. Improvements included new bridges along Tri-State Tollway (I-294) over Illinois Route 83 (147th Street) as well as roadway reconstruction and widening along the routes.

The Roderick Group provided inspections for bridge demolition and reconstruction, pavement removal and reconstruction, drainage and electrical improvements. We were part of the same Phase III improvements for IDOT to the same location.

US Route 30 Over CN Railroad

The Roderick Group was part of a mentor-protégé agreement, and provided work for the grade separation at US 30 at the CN Railroad in Lynwood, IL. Work for the project included a complete construction of a new grade separation of US 30 and the CN Railroad with a new bridge spanning the tracks, roadway reconstruction of approximately 3,500 feet of US 30, a new frontage road system, improvements to the Sauk Trail/US 30 Intersection, drainage improvement and landscaping The existing at grade rail crossing was replaced with a grade separation structure carrying U.S. Route 30 over the CN Railroad.

The Roderick Group personnel provided construction inspection for all phases of construction and are mentored in contract documentation for the review and recording of daily reports, material test results and certifications, preparation of pay estimates, change orders and other documents as required.

Circle Interchange Flyover

The I-90/94 at I-290 Circle Interchange is located in the heart of downtown Chicago, adjacent to the west end of the central business district. Greektown is located to the northwest, and the University of Illinois at Chicago is situated to the southwest. The Circle Interchange is critical to the nation’s transportation system, particularly for freight movement on our Interstate and arterial roadways, as well as to regional railroads and waterways. The Circle Interchange serves as a vital hub for local, regional, and national freight traffic.

In addition to providing construction inspection assistance, The Roderick Group was exposed to a higher level of involvement as a protégé. Activities included contract documentation, including daily report entries into the Quantity Book, assisting in the review and processing of material submittals to IDOT, review of the project schedule to note how various issues, contractor and non-contractor related, impact the schedule and periodic attendance at weekly progress meeting with the General Contractor.

The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority awarded a subsurface utility engineering contract for utility locating and relocation services throughout the Tollway system for the duration of five years. The Roderick Group assists in locating existing utilities to be accurately depicted on upcoming Contract Plans for roadway improvements being designed by other consultants.

City of Chicago Utility Locate Services

The City of Chicago DIGGER system was established to prevent contractors and private citizens from hitting any existing utilities while digging. The Roderick Group has entered into a 5-year agreement as a subconsultant to the City of Chicago to locate underground utilities for DIGGER within the public right-of-way for improvements performed by public and private entities. Utilities to be located include water mains and service lines, sewer, street light cable, traffic signal cables, OEMC and fiber optic cables.

The Roderick Group currently employs a staff of seven to assist in locating utilities year-round, as well as investigating damages to the City’s utility network and identifying which party caused the damage.

Services include locating electrical manholes in the City of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, evaluating the existing conditions of these structures and determining the extent of rehabilitation required.

The Roderick Group serves as a sub-consultant to HNTB on the CREATE Program Management team. In this capacity, The Roderick Group is responsible for project oversight services during the construction phase, including tracking and monitoring construction progress, budget, schedule compliance and project issue tracking, and coordinating with designers and stakeholders.

The Roderick Group oversees construction layout, including staking, material testing and inspection, documentation of materials and quantities, record keeping and enforcement of IDOT’s specifications.

The Roderick Group currently serves as a subconsultant on the Illinois Tollway’s Program Management Services (PMO) contract. The contract is part of the Tollway’s 15-year, $12 Billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future. The Roderick Group provides services including supplemental day-to-day management of design and construction contracts within the program, overall team coordination, contract invoicing, change orders and construction management agreements.

CTA Red Purple Modernization

As a subconsultant, The Roderick Group conducted a detailed inspection of the automatic train control system on Chicago Transit Authority’s Red and Purple Lines between Clark Junction and Howard. Internal wiring was traced within the existing relay houses to determine what vital circuit modifications had been previously made but never recorded. This advance work was necessary in order to assess the condition of the existing wayside signal system and document any changes discovered in the field to reflect as-built conditions.

The Roderick Group also assisted with CAD support for the final signal system design. Qualified CAD staff worked closely with signal design engineers to develop and prepare the final design documents necessary for construction bidding.

In addition, The Roderick Group participated in the assessment of new track circuit technologies. State-of-the-art audio frequency track circuits were installed and interfaced with the CTA’s existing automatic train control system in order to demonstrate their performance under in-service conditions. The track circuits were monitored and evaluated for wayside train detection, cab speed-command injection and compatibility with CTA’s type of automatic train control.

As a subconsultant, The Roderick Group conducted detailed inspections of the automatic train control system on Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line between Jefferson Park and O’Hare Terminal. Existing relay rooms were inspected to identify spare cable conductors and spare vital relay contacts, and generated a tabulation of the discovered data. This advance work was necessary in order to assess the condition of the existing wayside signal system and document any changes discovered in the field to reflect as-built conditions.

The Roderick Group also participated in the inspection and assessment of the existing signal and communication manhole-duct line system west of Jefferson Park. This effort was necessary to assess the duct line condition and determine spare conduit availability for future signal system improvements.

In addition, The Roderick Group also inspected the wayside electric traction power system in all special track work areas to identify and document the existing positive contact rail feeders as well as the negative return configuration, including supplemental conductors, both rail and cable, jumpers and cross-bonding.

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) – Wilson Street Transfer Station

The Roderick Group provided material consulting services for the Chicago Transit Authority’s Red Line Wilson Street Station. Services were part of a larger engineering investigation providing data necessary for restoration of the 90 year old structure, without compromising its historic status.

The Roderick Group’s scope was to assist in determining the current strength, composition and durability properties for the following materials: steel beams and column connections; concrete floor slabs, terra cotta façade, common brick and mortar samples from the exterior of the building. Services also included the investigation of exterior lintels and column connections.
